Shanna Robb of the Art Alliance of Idyllwild used the help of Noah Whitney and his cherry picker truck to hang up the new banners around town on Saturday. Using the truck was a lot safer than using extension ladders as was done the last time the banners were hung around town. The banners represent various organizations throughout town. Today, Sunday, March 2, the National Weather Service has no warnings or watches posted for the Hill. As the remnants of the last storm will pass over the Idyllwild today, a few remaining showers and flurries may still occur. But at 9 a.m., some sunshine was passing through the thinning clouds and shadows were observable on the road.

Today’s the NWS is forecasting a 40 percent chance of showers, mainly before 4 p.m., mostly cloudy, with a high near 53. For tonight, the forecast is a 20 percent chance of showers before 10 p.m.

The Accuweather.com forecast see the chance of rain falling to 17 percent by 10 a.m. and then 2 percent for the afternoon.

Sunny days return Monday and temperatures blossom into the 70’s by Wednesday and Thursday.

Through 8 a.m., Sunday, Keenwild Ranger Station recorded 4.1 inches of rain since Thursday, which brings the total rain since July 1 to 11.6 inches. Despite the abundance of precipitation, the total is only 62 percent of the normal long-term rainfall from July 1 until March.

Historically, the remaining four months of the rain year (July 1 through June 30) brings 7 inches of rain. If that occurs this year, the rainfall here would still be 8 inches less than normal, which would be the third consecutive year.

The NWS reports that Pine Cove received 4.85 inches of rain during these storms. Lake Arrowhead had nearly 9 inches of rain and Palomar Mountain got 8.4 inches, according to the NWS.

Jim Crandall, Palms to Pines Golf Association handicap chair, provided this report about last Friday’s golf tournament at the Hemet Golf Club.

The regular monthly tournament was held in conjunction with the final match-play playoff for the title of club champion. The start was delayed because of thick fog, which soon dissolved into a bright, sunny fall day.  The fairways were a bit rough but the greens were fast and true.

In the playoffs, Mike Feyder (course handicap 20) beat Pete Capparelli (18) four holes up with three to play. As the club champion, Feyder will represent Palms to Pines in the Southern California Golf Assocation Tournament of Club Champions in December. In the regular stroke-play tourney, Bill Ragland (13) shot a net-68 for first place; John Brower (9) shot a net 71 for second; and a three-way tie for third was between Chuck Alkire (11), Ray Rickards (9) and Feyder (20), all with net 72s.

Brower holed his second shot from about 100 yards out on the par-4 eighth hole for an eagle to win a special prize. The closest-to-the-pin winners on the four par-3s were Alkire on hole four, Feyder on hole seven, and John LoGiudice (18) on holes 14 and 17.

PPGA welcomes new members Don DePalma, David Hiemenz and Rickards.

Cross-country running has returned to Idyllwild Middle School a second year under the guidance of volunteer coaches Lee Arnson and Misty Hitchcock. The team competed against other local middle schools last year, the first time in nearly 15 years.

“The beauty is that everyone gets to run,” Arnson said. He credits Hitchcock with initial efforts to revive the sport. The coaches have the students running three times a week. Each practice begins with extensive stretching and warm-ups.

This year, the team has doubled, from 10 to 21 runners. Two of last year’s participants — Riley Arnson and Micah Hitchcock — are freshmen at Hemet High School and running for the school’s varsity team this year.

Last Monday was the team’s first 2013 meet. Everyone got to run and five of the students brought home medals, Arnson said. Three more middle school meets will be run this fall.

The team is planning a jog-a-thon after school for Wednesday, Oct. 30, to raise money for entry fees, transportation and team shirts. “We’d like to avoid draining the school’s funding for other extra-curriculum activities,” Arnson said, explaining the fundraiser’s purpose.

Besides Riley and Micah, juniors Jayden Emerson, Chad Schelly and Tanner Torrez, all from Idyllwild, are members of the Hemet High School varsity cross-country team.
