Acting Idyllwild Fire Chief Mark LaMont has been offered the position of fire chief permanently. Commission President Jerry Buchanan announced the commission’s decision Tuesday night at the conclusion of a closed session.

He added that it is still subject to negotiating a satisfactory contract with LaMont. The final decision may still be a few weeks in the future. But LaMont is the commission’s preference.

“I’m looking forward to continuing the service that we provide at Idyllwild Fire,” LaMont said.

LaMont had been assistant fire chief under Chief Patrick Reitz, who resigned in March under circumstances that have been kept from public knowledge. Buchanan emphasized that the assistant fire chief position will not be filled.
