Mary M. Sweningsen Sigworth
Harrison W. Sigworth
1922-2014

cruiseHarry and Mary, both 92, would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary this week. Inseparable and devoted to one another, it was fitting that after Mary died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, Harry would spend only nine more days with us before he left to join her.

Mary Margaret was born Jan. 27, 1922 to Oliver Sweningsen and Edwine Vignes Sweningsen in Long Beach. At an early age, she developed an affinity for animals, particularly birds, and raised a parrot that amused people with its many human characteristics. Mary graduated from Stanford in 1943 and went on to earn her elementary education teaching certificate. She briefly taught fourth and fifth grades in Long Beach schools but had a lifelong gift for engaging children.

Harrison was born Feb. 8, 1922, in Norfolk, Nebraska, to Dwight C. and Irene Cratty Sigworth. In 1925, his family moved to Long Beach where his father was a doctor in general practice. Harry came from a long line of doctors, but he broke with tradition and pursued his interest, graduating cum laude from Cal Tech in 1943 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Upon graduating, he spent three years in the Navy as a submariner, some of that time spent in the Southwest Pacific during WWII.

Harry and Mary, having known each other since the third grade, were married in 1945.  The couple moved to the Bay Area when Harry joined the Standard Oil Company of California (Chevron) in fuels and lubricants research in Richmond. His work led him to become co-inventor of detergent additives for gasoline. In 1959 and 1960, the company sent him to Stanford to get an MBA. He rose through management positions in the company to become assistant to the president and spent a total of 38 years with Chevron, mostly in the San Francisco headquarters.

Mary and Harry lived in Orinda for many years where they raised their four children. Mary continued to teach children as a volunteer with her children’s school PTA as well as being active as a Girl Scout leader and Sunday school teacher for many, many years. Harry was active in Boy Scouts as a scoutmaster, and ended his long commitment to scouting by creating and leading an Explorer Post, with the purpose to teach teens to restore antique cars, principally Model A Fords.

Mary’s joyful relationship with Idyllwild began in 1925 when her parents bought a cabin. Every summer, her mother, brother and she moved to Idyllwild while her father commuted on weekends. Her memories and stories of early Idyllwild were vivid and entertaining. After marriage, the summer tradition continued as Harry moved her and their children to the Hill for at least a month each summer.

After retirement in 1983, Harry and Mary moved full-time to the home in Idyllwild Harry had carefully remodeled. Mary was then able to devote full attention to her passions of enjoying this mountain town, befriending birds and entertaining grandchildren. Harry, when not involved in Rotary projects or participating on the IWD board, enjoyed the time to pursue his love of restoring old cars and building small, gasoline-powered vehicles for his grandchildren to drive on the property.

The couple is survived by their four children: Harry (Patricia) Sigworth Jr. of San Ramon; Dwight (Karen) Sigworth of Tigard, Oregon; Fred (Vicky) Sigworth of Hamden, Connecticut; and Edwina (Kurt) Barats of Eagle, Idaho; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014 at Idyllwild Community Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Boys Scouts of America or Idyllwild Community Church.

Flowers of the forest for 2022

0

Throughout their lives, all of the people in this annual tribute were connected to Idyllwild. And because these are such small communities, many of the names that appear in Town Crier obituaries have appeared in past pages of the Town Crier when those people were alive. In that sense, they live on in the written history of our community, as well as in the memories of the people they left behind. They were volunteers for one of the many organizations on the Hill, they were friends, they were relatives of a close friend, they were co-workers, they were fellow students or they were family. They were part of our community. We pause to memorialize in our first February newspaper of the new year, the names of 46 people who died in 2022, and five people whose 2021 passings were reported in 2022.

A brand management and crisis communication professor I know at a leading university contends that brands reside in the minds of customers, not at company headquarters. So, when crisis strikes, he argues, protecting the brand boils down to this: protecting your customers.
Our Association of news publishers and editors is charged with protecting the “brands” of 450-plus California newspapers. We’ve been fighting against a rising tide of newsroom closures as the COVID-19 wave breaks over our members’ businesses.
We’re advocating for passage of Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio’s, D-Baldwin Park, Assembly Bill 323 to get relief and prevent job losses, small business failures and threats to freedom of the press. All valid and prescient rationale, of course. But I suspect that some see the arguments as self-preservationist: it’s just business trying to protect its profits.
In truth, however, our advocacy is a plea to protect our readers, the people who rely on news reporting to inform their daily lives as citizen-activists, consumers, foodies, artists, travelers and sports fanatics, to name few.
We tend to take news — and free press — for granted in our country. It is in our constitutional DNA, so we rarely consider life without it. But we may have to. Due in large measure to the financial impact of the pandemic and the increased costs of new employment laws in California, the death knell is sounding for dozens and dozens of community and ethnic newspapers.
We’re working to keep their presses running and protect readers from the crushing impact of “news-less” communities, public information deserts, in effect.
What if Idyllwild didn’t have a watchdog on public corruption, law enforcement and the latest internet scam? What if voters had to go to the polls not knowing what candidates really stand for? And try to imagine morning coffee without an opinion page to get the blood running (or boiling) or letters from neighbors to express agreement and joy, dismay and disappointment?
And that’s not all. Think about weeks without obituaries, columnists and cartoons and feature stories on community events, places to go and things to see.
To some, losing these newspaper-delivered information assets may seem inconsequential. There are plenty of other news outlets: radio and TV, social media, blogospheres, etc.
But readers hardly find them adequate. They want more than soundbites and Tweets from untrustworthy trolls. They want the credible — and more expansive — coverage provided by working journalists at local newspapers.
According to the Pew Research Center, “an overwhelming majority of adults say it is at least somewhat important for journalists to understand their community’s history (85%) and to be personally engaged with their local area (81%), and at least four-in-10 deem each very important.”
Pew’s research is more than a data point. It is a description of the relationship between readers and reporters that is at the heart of our free society. With as many as 20% of the state’s newspapers on the financial cliff, the relationship is in jeopardy in many communities, most of which have only the local paper to gather and report news.
But the relationship doesn’t have to end. Together, readers and newspapers can save local journalism by telling representatives in Sacramento that we strongly support Rubio’s AB 323. Passing it will bolster local news outlets by granting greater access to state advertising and more time to adjust to independent contractor laws.
Just call your Assemblyperson and Senator today and say, “Vote for AB 323 to save local journalism in my hometown.” Here is the contact information:
Assemblyman Randy Voepel: 916-319-2071
Senator Melissa Melendez: 916-651-4028
There is a saying that goes, when we take things for granted, the things we are granted get taken. Our Association is working very hard to make sure it doesn’t apply to local newspapers in this case.
In the meantime, we know the Idyllwild Town Crier will do what it has been doing every week: keep you abreast of the news and in touch with events that affect your daily lives.

Flowers of the forest for 2017

Throughout their lives, all of the people in this annual tribute were connected to Idyllwild.

And because these are such small communities, many of the names that appear in Town Crier obituaries have appeared in past pages of the Town Crier when those people were alive. In that sense, they live on in the written history of our community, as well as in the memories of the people they left behind.

They were volunteers for one of the many organizations on the Hill, they were friends, they were relatives of a close friend, they were co-workers, they were fellow students and they were family. They were part of our community.

The Town Crier pauses to memorialize in its first newspaper of the new year, the names of 36 people who died in 2017 and three who were omitted in 2016:

Obituary: John Henry Dykes 1926-2002; Evelyn Maxine Dykes 1934-2008

0

Both deceased some time ago, John in 2002, and Maxine in 2008. Both passed away quietly in Hemet.

Mr. Dykes was born on State Street in Hemet, and years later became the only marshal of the now-defunct Hemet Judicial District.

The Dykes family lived on the Hill from 1958 to 1972. John and Maxine have two sons, Gary (Gale née Edwards) of Port Angeles, Washington, and Jon (Rebecca) of Crescent City. John and Maxine have three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Dykes was a Navy veteran of World War II (Aircraft Carrier, Langley CVL-27).

In Idyllwild, he first worked at the County Park, then later started a succesful security patrol business with his faithful dog Jingles.

It was John Dykes who first located and assisted in the arrest of the “rare” bank robber of the old Security Pacific Bank in Hemet.

Maxine was a waitress at the old Welch’s Carriage Inn, and later, Dr. Garcia’s receptionist. She also became a deputy marshal.

We all have many old friends on the Hill, and my parents are now listed in these obituaries. It is hoped that they shall rise and meet us and others “in the air.” (I Thess. 4:16-18).
